Texas Hillel Student Center

Texas Hillel serves as a vibrant community center for over 4,000 Jewish students at the University of Texas at Austin. The design is driven by two core ambitions: to create an inviting building that draws students inside, and to seamlessly weave spirituality into daily life. Uniquely, Texas Hillel unites the three principal movements of Judaism, worshiping simultaneously under one roof.

Strategically located at a prominent West Campus intersection, the building engages its urban context through a transparent glass curtain wall, subtly defining its precinct while inviting passersby inside. The upper level is wrapped in a variegated wood screen that provides shade and evokes the imagery of a Sukkah—a temporary structure central to the harvest festival of Sukkot. This screen not only holds symbolic significance but also animates exterior spaces, encouraging students to gather and become the living embodiment of the building’s spirit.
