Alterstudio Architecture is a full-service architecture and interior design firm celebrated for its inventiveness, craftsmanship, and thoughtful detailing. Our work is grounded in the enduring values of architecture—generous space-making, refined daylighting, and meticulous attention to detail. Each project is driven by a desire to elevate everyday experience while framing the complex realities of place, culture, and context.

We design precise, creative buildings, landscapes, and interiors that are deeply responsive to their environments. Our work reflects a commitment to both cultural and ecological stewardship, demonstrated through technical rigor and long-term sustainability. We believe ethical architecture arises from a deep understanding of place and a respect for limited resources—informing every design decision, from programming and material selection to detailing and construction methods.

Kevin Alter is dedicated to the design of elegant architecture across a wide range of building types and scales. In addition to his professional practice, he serves as the Sid W. Richardson Centennial Professor of Architecture at the University of Texas at Austin. From 2001 to 2014, he held leadership roles as Academic Director for Architecture Programs and Associate Dean for Graduate Programs.
An accomplished writer and editor, Kevin has edited twelve books and contributed essays to Architecture, Progressive Architecture, Architectural Design, and numerous other publications. He has curated sixteen exhibitions shown internationally and has organized multiple symposia exploring the intersections of design, theory, and practice.
Ernesto Cragnolino, FAIA, was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and raised in Columbus, Ohio, and Long Island, New York, before moving to Austin to attend the University of Texas. With over 25 years of experience, he has led the design of institutional, commercial, and residential projects for a wide range of clients and budgets. Ernesto has also taught design and construction at the University of Texas at Austin School of Architecture, with a focus on building envelope design and detailing. In recognition of his contributions to the profession, he was elevated to the AIA College of Fellows in 2016.
Tim Whitehill grew up in San Antonio and graduated with Highest Honors from the University of Texas at Austin’s School of Architecture in 2002. With over two decades of experience, he has worked with award-winning architecture firms across Texas, California, and Massachusetts. After returning to Alterstudio from San Francisco, Tim became a partner in 2011. He now leads the design and programming of the firm’s projects, bringing thoughtful direction to work that spans a range of scales and budgets.
