Extraordinary views in the heart of the city—and a small buildable footprint constrained by restrictive easements—prompted a slender three-story home, with the primary living spaces and master suite located on the top floor. A sixteen-foot-tall wood screen wraps the body of the house and rests delicately atop a solid limestone base.

Visitors enter through a pivoting glass door and are immediately greeted by a stair composed of ebonized oak treads, floating between twin steel channels and suspended within a dramatic three-story vertical void. Beyond, an etched glass wall captures the shadows of a stand of giant bamboo, while a horizontal band of clear glazing draws the eye to a private garden beyond.

Punctuating the wooden façade are two projecting steel box windows, their mirrored surfaces or deep shadows shifting in contrast to the screen’s delicate filigree. At night, the screen transforms into a glowing lantern, revealing the layered collection of spaces within. Two ten-foot panels of the wood screen unfold to reveal the formal dining room’s exterior balcony—blurring boundaries between interior and exterior in both form and function.
