Pemberton Residence

The single-story Pemberton Residence offers a counterpoint to the oversized new homes and expansive additions that have disrupted the once-coherent fabric of this central Austin neighborhood. Modestly nestled between the gables of adjacent houses, it embraces a rich and dynamic interior world.

Designed for empty nesters trading spare bedrooms for proximity to downtown’s restaurants and live music, the home draws inspiration from Joseph Eichler’s Northern California residences—creating a luminous interior deeply connected to the outdoors and animated by shifting light and shadow.

Rooms are organized between three carefully proportioned courtyards, providing a surprising sense of openness and privacy despite the compact site. Curving oak-clad forms at the front and rear introduce warmth and movement, shaping a space that feels at once calm and expressive.
