Hillside Residence

The Hillside Residence is a substantial renovation and expansion of a 1927 bungalow. The original 1,000-square-foot home was rescued from dilapidation and abstractly delineated in stark white, paired with a new sculptural volume clad in black-stained cypress, connected by a glass entry bridge. Inspired by Marcel Breuer’s 1943 Bi-Nuclear House concept, the design splits the home into two zones—one for living and socializing, the other for concentration and sleeping—linked by a central entry where both sides engage in visual dialogue.

The renovation honors the original building’s character, preserving the discrete, inward-focused collection of rooms. In contrast, the new addition embraces openness, spatial continuity, and abstraction. Salvaged lumber from the existing structure is thoughtfully repurposed throughout the home—from shiplap accent walls to counters crafted from long leaf pine beams, and split-cedar entry steps reclaimed from the original house piers—bridging past and present with care and craftsmanship.
